Hover Robins

We lived in Atlanta for several years and hummingbirds were regular summer visitors to the flowers outside our kitchen window. They're amazing little birds and look like brightly coloured jewels hovering effortlessly in front of the flowers. I didn't expect to see anything like it here, but I'm delighted to say we have some hover Robins.

#100DaysOfNature Day 32

They start off on the branch, then fly to the bird cake and hover in front of it. They fly in and peck off some food, hover while they eat it, then go in again for more food. They can do that three or four times before they have to return to the branch to rest.

Even the baby Robins have been copying the parents and having a go. Although they can only manage to get one or two mouthfuls of food before landing.

They may not be quite as agile or have the stamina of a Hummingbird, but I think they're pretty clever and mesmerizing to watch!
