And then there were three ...

We now have three silk moths, with a new one appearing at the same time each evening for three days in a row.

When the second one hatched we just happened to be there as it emerged from it's cocoon and managed to take photos of it as it pumped up and dried its crumpled up wings. It broke out of the silk cocoon and climbed up the wall of the cage. At this point it had tiny little wings that were wrapped around its body.

The kids were captivated!

Over the next 40 minutes it pumped up its wings, stretching them out and straightening them until eventually they were their full length. This series of photos shows its progress...

After 40 minutes it's wings were fully pumped up but still looked soft and needed to dry out.

It was amazing to see how much it changed in such a short amount of time.
