Two surprise visitors

My first surprise visitor of the day was a Goldfinch feasting on the seeds of the Evening Primrose plants. Last winter we would occasionally see a flock of them eating the seeds on the big buddlea in the garden, but this is the first one I've seen in the garden this year and it was right outside the kitchen window.

They're really striking birds, with bright red faces and a flash of gold on their wings.

Then about 5 minutes later a Thrush appeared over the fence. I can't remember the last time I saw one in the garden, so that was a very welcome surprise. Apparently they're on the RSPB red list as their number have seriously declined in recent years.

Winter must be here and they're coming into the gardens to look for food.
